A clear-cut mistake threatens the drinking water for millions of Bay Staters
For decades, more than 2 million Massachusetts residents have been able to count on clean, healthy drinking water from the Quabbin reservoir. The forestland surrounding the Quabbin—set aside years ago thanks to the foresight of the state—filters out pollutants and helps maintain some of the purest drinking water in the country.
But in late 2009 the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation allowed loggers to clear-cut an area surrounding the Quabbin, exposing a major threat to our biggest source of drinking water, and a larger problem: Less than 40 percent of state forests are off-limits to destructive clear-cuts.
