Obama for president

This summer, Environment Massachusetts endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Sen. John McCain deserves credit for bucking his party in the past on such environmental issues as global warming. However, Sen. Obama’s clean energy plan is superior, offering more hope that America can meet the challenge of global warming, build a new economy based on renewable energy, and break our addiction to oil.

Sen. Obama has also proven to be a more consistent champion of the environment and our health on such issues as toxic pollution, clean air and water, and the preservation of our natural treasures.

Study points to troubling news on toxics

Many of the products you’re likely to find in a newborn’s nursery emit toxic chemicals into the room’s air. That’s the troubling finding of a report we released in May, along with Environment California, another member of our national federation.

We tested 21 products for babies found at Babies “R” Us, Target and Wal-Mart. In six cribs, changing tables and dressers, we found dangerously high emissions of formaldehyde, at levels that increase the risk for humans of developing allergies and asthma.

Upon releasing the findings, we renewed our call on Beacon Hill leaders to adopt the Safer Alternative Act, a bill that would require manufacturers to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives. Unfortunately, the Legislature failed to advance the bill before the close of the legislative session on July 31.
