Ask your friends to speak up for the whales

The leading cause of death by these Right whales is from being struck by ships.

With only 350 of these whales left on the planet, it is critical to protect places like the Stellwagen Bank that give them the shelter they need to bounce back from the verge of extinction.

As federal officials come up with a new plan for managing Stellwagen Bank, we need to make sure it's enough to help right whales make a comeback.

Message Hi, I just learned something urgent about the Right Whale right off our our coast that I wanted to share with you. It is estimated that there are only 350 North Atlantic Right Whales left in the world. These beautiful creatures were hunted to the brink of extinction for blubber and meat. In fact, the name "right whale" came from whalers who said these whales were the "right" whales to hunt. By the time whaling was banned, the Right Whale had almost died out. These creatures are still in serious trouble, and need every protection we can give them so they can make a comeback. Massachusetts' Stellwagen Bank, stretching from Cape Ann to Cape Cod, is one of their most important mating and feeding grounds. Unfortunately, even in this marine sanctuary, the Right Whales don't have enough protection. Industrial ships still move through the bank. Factory fishing vessels take out much of the available food. Discarded fishing nets snare whale calves. A major shipping lane goes right through their most important habitat, and a result whales are hit and killed by massive ships.
